Sea Cucumbers: The Janitors of the Sea | Cody Clements
Coral reefs are in dramatic global decline, with outbreaks of coral diseases playing a significant and increasingly frequent role in recent decades. This is especially true for Acroporid corals that represent ~25% of all Pacific coral species, were once dominant in the Caribbean but are now endangered, and that generate much of the topographic complexity on which many other species depend.
Coral diseases commonly appear sediment-associated and could be exacerbated by the overharvest of sediment-feeding detritivores. Our recent findings from French Polynesia and Palmyra Atoll suggests that sea cucumbers, which have been overharvested for decades, strongly suppress disease among Acropora corals directly contacting reef sediments.
Sea cucumbers may historically have played a key role suppressing pathogenic microbes, and their overharvest during the past 200+ years may facilitate infectious diseases that have decimated coral reefs. Restoring the essential cleaning services of these once-abundant “janitors of the sea” may help reduce coral losses to disease in a changing ocean.
Cody Clements is currently a Research Scientist at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, USA, and has spent over a decade conducting research in French Polynesia, Fiji, and other locales throughout the Pacific. His research interests focus on understanding how coral reef ecosystems are structured and function in a rapidly changing ocean, as well as integrating these insights into conservation strategies that can promote ecosystem health and the services they provide for coastal communities.

Groundbreakers: The Return of Britain's Wild Boar | Chantal Lyons
Переглядів 325День тому
Big, messy and mysterious - crossing paths with a wild boar can conjure fear and joy in equal measure. Driven to extinction 700 years ago, a combination of the species' own tenacity and illegal releases from the 1980s has now seen several populations return. With growing worry over the impacts on both people and the countryside, the boar's right to exist in Britain has been heavily debated. The...
The Wondrous Birds of Elizabeth Gould | Andrea Hart
Переглядів 29214 днів тому
The name Elizabeth Gould might be unfamiliar to many, but working alongside her husband John Gould, her artistic skill and aptitude helped break the mould of bird illustration in the nineteenth century. Due to her early death, and, perhaps overshadowed by her husband’s status, the significant contribution to and the scientific and artistic legacy she made to this area of visual art has not alwa...

Phytophagan beetles, which include weevils, longicorns, and leaf beetles, number over 120,000 species and form one of the largest radiations on Earth. Their ancient relationship with plants was crucial to evolutionary success. Among them, the leaf beetle subfamily, Cassidinae, known as tortoise beetles and leaf-mining beetles, offers a fascinating window into understanding this evolutionary jou...
What Can Birds' Nests Teach us About Evolution? | Catherine Sheard
Переглядів 266Місяць тому
Most birds build a nest, a key adaptation protecting eggs and chicks from predators and harsh environments. From the collections of Victorian naturalists to the popularity of bird's nest soup, human fascination with nests has generated many hypotheses on the role that nests play in avian ecology and evolution. Thanks to new data and computational techniques, we can now begin to test these ideas...
The Tree of Life Motif: Honouring Nature in the Home | Susanna Paisley
Переглядів 6552 місяці тому
This event was part of the London Craft Week 2024. The "tree of life" motif stands with reassuring centrality in the world of design, its limbs branching sinously through various times and cultures. It is incomprehensible to think of our planet without plants, of life without plants. Consequently, the symbol of the 'tree of life' centres around regeneration, life force and the kinship amongst a...
Drawn to Extinction: Depicting the Thylacine | Jack Ashby

The last known thylacine died in September 1936. Also known as Tasmanian tigers, they were the largest marsupial carnivores of modern times, and were deliberately eradicated after being falsely accused of harming the colonial sheep-farming industry. They have since become icons of both extinction and the state of Tasmania. The Linnean Society holds one of the earliest European illustrations of ...

Andrea: "The project took 5 years." Me: "How many children did she have to birth during that time?" How fortunate we are to have your research to bring Elizabeth Gould back to the forefront. I love John Gould's loose and general paintings. He was doing a version of "reverse" colouring before it was a thing. I could see a reverse colouring book with his paintings. He could be credited as ornithology artist Elizabeth Gould's husband. ;-)

500,000 barred owls slated to be killed because they're encroaching on spotted owl territory. Should we employ the same method against humans for their encroachment on, and destruction of, spotted owl habitat which has been decimated by logging? And it is those same man-made alterations to the environment that induced the barred owl to move west in the first place

I enjoyed your presentation on Gilbert White and Selbourne. Beautifully preserved primary documents to be sure! His time period overlaps with my research on Thomas Davies ( 1737-1812) a military painter and naturalist. He was in Gibraltar circa 1765- 1768 and I am wondering if he may have come across John White while collecting there. I was familiar with the Fauna Calpensis. John may have exchanged insects with men like Dry Drury and Daines Barrington. Barrington seems to have also had a connection to Gibraltar as well. I remember seeing some of the sketches made of Gibraltar by brother John on line at the Morgan Library in New York. I appreciate the herculean effort put effort into your work and research. Kudos to you! My last point is, might you have some letters of correspondence between Gilbert White and Samuel Kuckhan./Keuckan. He was a German born member of the RS, who mater moved to Jamaica. Gilbert has asked him for some Jamaican birds circa 1770-1772. Many of these collectors had a great conduit of trans -Atlantic exchange.

Thank you Linnean Society for your excellent and informative programming. I enjoyed watching this video and learning about the Gwillam Sisters project based at McGill in Montreal. Thanks to your guest speakers Victoria and Anna for their insightful coverage of Elizabeth and Mary and how their unique positions fit into the material and cultural life of India in the 18th century. This video gave a good overview of the food, textiles, plants, fish and birds of Madras and explained the unique position that female painters and collectors experienced in the backdrop of colonial tensions of power in the early 1800s. I am looking forward to your 'Hidden Hands" project and its unique connections to Canada!

I find it fascinating how little the word is getting across in academia that evolution essentially is pseudo science and should be retired at this point. Discovery of epigenetics alone... far less all the sequencing of genomes show mutation rates in many species now far too high to allow an evolution explanation most importantly the encode project showing humans never evolved 100 fold higher mutations than the limit it's not even a debate.

The bees were on me but no stings. After that he would let me go in with him when he was doing maintenance. A bee lit on my face and put a drop on honey on my lip. This also happened to me as an adult with my own bee hives. My question is how did the bee know where to give me a kiss? RobertCMize

Very enjoyable and informative insights into the naming of plants - Thanks. - One thing that does frustrate me sometimes is the renaming of plants for no apparent reason eg Leptospermum scoparium ( manuka) and Leptospermum ericiodes (kanuka) now called Kunzea ericoides - These two plants are very similar so I'm not sure what the need was to change the genus. Eugenia is another one.

As a struggling researcher, I really appreciate his earnest answer to the question of "How can I be a professional ornithologist?" To summarize, he said "You'll need a PhD, then to travel for a postdoctoral position here and a postdoc there, and to hopefully win a race to get publications into top tier journals." I especially appreciate that he mentioned women (i.e. if we hope to have kids, then this research timeframe sets our professional and biological clocks at odds.) I'm in a different 'ology, but would have loved to get such specific advice when I was making decisions about whether/what graduate degree to pursue. His advice is daunting but so much more useful than the pablum "If you dream it, you can do it," which has led to standard-issue disillusionment for young people across the board.
